Within the funeral profession, cremation has been a widely discussed topic for many years now. As rising numbers of families opt for this service over burial, it’s expected that funeral directors will have to make changes. Here’s what the research says.
Key trends and insights
When the NFDA’s 2010 and 2015 report on Cremation was analysed, it became clear that rates were rising across the US. The average percentage of cremations across all US states was 42% in 2010, but by 2015 the rate reached 50% and surpassed the burial rate for the first time ever. It is estimated that rates will continue to rise, with an average of 57% expected for 2020.
So, is cremation on the rise? Of course we’re now in 2024, and the average cremation rate this year has reached 61.9%. Now, the NFDA projects a cremation rate of almost 80% by 2040 and with a burial rate of nearly 16%.
